Swastika is Sanskrit meaning “well-being”. Before Hitler chose to use the swastika as an icon for the Nazis, it had been used for millenniums as a religious image in various cultures around the world. Throughout most of history, it has been associated with positive meanings.

americian-Indians2.jpgThough it is not known for exactly how long, Native Americans have long used the symbol of the swastika. It can vary in meaning from one tribe to another. The symbol was used by the ancient Native Americans of the Mississippian culture. It has been found in excavations their sites in the Ohio valley. It was widely used by many southwestern tribes. To the Hopi it represented the wandering Hopi clan. To the Navajo it was a symbol for a whirling winds (tsil no'oli'), a sacred

image representing a legend that was used in healing rituals, but after learning of the Nazi use of the symbol, the tribe stopped using the it.*

I believe we should do what we can to restore the original meanings and not allow Hitler to keep something we can take back.
